Can You Use a Water Fed Pole in Winter?

The short answer is yes, you can still use your water fed pole in the winter, although some extra precautions need to be taken.

1. Be careful of runoff. If your water runs off the windows and across foot traffic areas, it can freeze, causing a slip hazard. Make sure you use rock salt or something similar to melt the ice. Signage is also important for warning of the danger.

2. Be careful on the glass. If using a hot water system, keep in mind the window glass will be colder than normal and the quick temperature change can crack the glass. If you are using hot water, then turn the temperature down by at least 10 to 20 degrees.

3. Be careful with your hose. If using a cold-water system, don’t leave the hose wound out on the ground for very long without water running through it. Static water in a small hose can freeze very quickly when it’s lying on the frozen ground.

4. Be careful about wind chill. Water may freeze on the windows, especially depending on the wind chill. Usually about 25 degrees (with wind chill included) is about as low as you want to go.
